Starfish

Our Mission

Strengthening families to create brighter futures for children.

Who We Are

Founded in 1963, Starfish Family Services is a private, nonprofit agency serving vulnerable children and families in metropolitan Detroit. Early childhood development is our passion. Every day, we strive to prepare young children for a successful start to school. As a leading provider of Early Head Start and Head Start programs, we embrace a comprehensive strategy that works to address challenges our children and their families may face at home. We provide parenting resources, children’s mental health services, after-school programs, and an emergency shelter for teens and youth in crisis. Based in Inkster we have more than a dozen programs at service sites throughout metropolitan Detroit, 400 employees, and a $39 million dollar budget that serves more than 10,000 at-risk children and families each year.

How We Carry Out Our Mission

With respect: We recognize and respect the important role of parents and other caregivers in the long-term success of children.

With belief: We believe in the potential of all children and the power of healthy parent-child relationships to break the cycles of poverty and create long-term positive outcomes for children. We believe in investing early in the lives of families to keep them intact.

With warmth: We endeavor to always be a warm, welcoming, positive presence in the community.
